What the public count can and can't tell you
YouTube abbreviates public subscriber counts (2.15M rather than 2,151,203), updates them in steps, and lets channels hide them entirely — so the public figure is a milestone tracker, not a per-second ticker. That's still enough for the things people actually check: whether a channel crossed 100K or 1M, how a competitor compares, and whether growth claims in a media kit match reality. For exact-to-the-subscriber numbers, only the channel owner's YouTube Studio has them.
From one check to a growth tracker
A single check answers "how many now?" — a schedule of checks answers "how fast?". Developers polling the YouTube Channel Details API hourly get subscriber count alongside exact total views and video count as JSON, which is all a growth dashboard, milestone alert bot, or sponsorship vetting sheet needs. Pair it with YouTube Channel Stats for the fuller public picture of any channel.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the live subscriber count?+
It's the count YouTube publishes at the moment you look it up — fetched fresh from the channel page, not from a stale database. Run it again to see movement.
Why does YouTube show 2.15M instead of an exact number?+
Since 2019 YouTube publicly abbreviates subscriber counts above 1,000 (2.15M, 313K). The exact live figure is only visible to the channel owner in Studio. When YouTube publishes a rounded figure we display it and mark it as rounded.
Can I check any channel?+
Any channel with public subscriber counts — the large majority. Some channels hide their subscriber count in settings; for those, YouTube publishes nothing and the field shows as unavailable.
What formats does the input accept?+
An @handle (@mkbhd), a full channel URL (youtube.com/@mkbhd or /channel/UC…), or a raw UC… channel ID — all resolve to the same channel.
Can I track a count over time?+
This page is a one-shot checker. For monitoring — hourly snapshots, growth dashboards, milestone alerts — call the YouTube Channel Details API on a schedule and store the results; a free key includes 100 credits at 1 credit per check.
How many free checks do I get?+
3 per day without an account, shared across our free lookup tools.
