Formula: (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100

Engagement rate

0.00%

What counts as good?

  • Instagram: 1–3% is solid, 3%+ is excellent.
  • TikTok: 3–6% is solid, 6%+ is excellent (by views).
  • YouTube: 2–4% is solid, 4%+ is excellent (by views).

Smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones, so compare against creators of a similar size.

Instagram benchmarks by account size

  • Under 5K followers: 5-8% is healthy — small audiences are dense with real fans.
  • 5K-20K: 3-6% is good; brands consider this the micro-influencer sweet spot.
  • 20K-100K: 2-4% is solid.
  • 100K-1M: 1.5-3% is normal; above that is exceptional.
  • 1M+: around 1% is typical — mega accounts trade rate for absolute reach.

Engagement rate falls as follower count grows on every platform — that's expected. What matters is being at or above the norm for your bracket, and trending stable or up.

Follower ER vs reach ER

Follower-based ER (this calculator) is the comparison standard because follower counts are public — you can compute it for any account, including competitors. Reach-based ER is a better internal health metric because it measures engagement among people who actually saw the post, but it requires Insights access. Use follower ER to benchmark externally and reach ER to diagnose your own content. To benchmark competitors at scale, the Instagram API returns post metrics and follower counts as JSON. Frequently asked questions

How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?+

The standard formula is (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over recent posts. Some analysts use reach instead of followers ((likes + comments) ÷ reach × 100), which better reflects how Instagram distributes content today — but follower-based ER remains the comparison standard brands use.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?+

Rule of thumb: 1-3% is average, 3-6% is good, above 6% is excellent. Small accounts run hotter — under 5K followers, 5-8% is common — while accounts over 100K typically sit near 1-2%. Judge against your size bracket, not the global average.

Why is my engagement rate dropping?+

Usually distribution, not content: Instagram shows feed posts to a fraction of followers, and that fraction shifts with the algorithm. Falling ER with steady content often means a stale audience (inactive followers accumulating) or a format mismatch — Reels currently earn more reach than static posts for most accounts.

How many posts should I average?+

Brands typically average the last 10-12 feed posts, excluding outliers like giveaways. A single post's ER swings too much to mean anything.

Do brands really check this number?+

Yes — it's usually the first filter in influencer vetting. A 50K account at 4% beats a 200K account at 0.8% for most campaigns, because ER approximates how much of the audience is real and paying attention.

Can I calculate engagement rate automatically?+

Yes — the Captapi Instagram API returns followers, likes, and comments for any public account as JSON, so you can compute ER for hundreds of accounts programmatically. A free key includes 100 credits.
